The Zcash development team quickly confirmed the successful activation in an official post on social media platform X, informing the broader crypto community that NU7 was officially live and operational on the testnet.

The deployment of NU7 represents the next major network upgrade for the privacy-centric cryptocurrency. The upgrade introduces several substantial changes to the underlying protocol, most notably a drastic reduction in the network’s target block spacing. While the current network relies on a 75-second target for block generation, NU7 seeks to shrink this interval down to just 25 seconds. Proponents of the change argue that faster block times will significantly improve transaction confirmation speeds and enhance the overall user experience on the network.

Beyond altering block intervals, the NU7 upgrade introduces other architectural modifications, including the total disablement of version 4 transactions. Furthermore, the protocol update integrates a Network Sustainability Mechanism designed to redirect a portion of network transaction fees directly into future block rewards, thereby supporting the long-term economic stability and security of the blockchain.

The decision to disable version 4 transactions carries significant implications for certain holders. Specifically, any ZEC tokens currently held within Zcash’s legacy Sprout shielded pool will become entirely unspendable unless users take proactive steps to move their funds before NU7 fully activates on the mainnet. This transition phase requires legacy holders to migrate their assets to ensure they do not lose access to their funds, underscoring the importance of the ongoing testnet phase.

In light of the testnet launch, the Zcash Foundation released a statement on Friday advising network operators, node runners, and developers to utilize the newly released software candidate—specifically Zebra 7.0.0-rc-0—to test the NU7 upgrade under real-world conditions. This rigorous testing period on the testnet allows developers and community stakeholders to thoroughly assess the performance, stability, and security of the upgrade before committing to a permanent mainnet activation.

Zcash developers are scheduled to make a final, formal decision regarding mainnet activation on Oct. 20. During this upcoming milestone, the team will evaluate the data and operational experience gathered from running NU7 on the testnet and subsequently set the exact activation height for the mainnet rollout. If testing proceeds without major complications, the mainnet activation for NU7 is targeted for Nov. 5.

Zcash has officially advanced its highly anticipated NU7 network upgrade to the testnet, marking a…

[604
937,607,605,1020,612,80,633,211,376,936,635,625,606
post-1058","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-identity-privacy","tag-ahead","tag-cryptography","tag-identity","tag-launch","tag-mainnet","tag-moves","tag-november","tag-privacy","tag-targeted","tag-testnet","tag-upgrade","tag-zcash","tag-zero-knowledge
["GET
