The intersection of cryptocurrency adoption and legacy financial networks presents unique hurdles for companies attempting to bridge the gap between decentralized assets and everyday retail transactions.

Andrey Ilinskiy, head of Tangem Pay, highlighted the intricate nature of rolling out crypto-linked payment cards across international borders in an interview with Cointelegraph. He explained that deploying these financial products involves navigating a delicate balance of competing forces rather than merely fulfilling consumer desires.

According to Ilinskiy, it is not simply a question of where people want crypto cards. Instead, it is a matter of where demand, regulation, banking infrastructure, and card-issuing requirements happen to line up, noting that today, those maps do not always overlap.

The insights from Tangem arrive on the heels of the company’s official announcement introducing its first physical Visa card designed for seamless in-store and online purchases, as well as ATM withdrawals. The initial rollout of the product is strictly limited to an exclusive batch of 5,000 cards as the Swiss firm tests the market and scales its operational capacity.

A key feature of the newly introduced Tangem Pay card is its direct integration with user self-custodial wallets. The company emphasized that users retain full control over their funds, allowing them to fund the card directly from their personal storage solutions and easily move funds back to their wallet if the physical card is ever suspended or closed.

This self-custodial architecture addresses a fundamental tenet of the cryptocurrency ethos while confronting the inherent friction of interfacing with centralized financial networks. Tangem noted that self-custody removes one major boundary by ensuring there is no custodian standing between the user and their assets, but pointed out that when those assets enter a regulated payment network, an entirely new set of boundaries inevitably appears.

Tangem delivers the cards in nearly 200 countries, excluding only 20

Despite the global ambitions of the project, logistical and regulatory barriers mean that physical Tangem Pay cards cannot be delivered everywhere. Tangem reported that it is currently unable to ship its cards to roughly 20 countries worldwide. Among the excluded jurisdictions are major nations and heavily sanctioned regions such as China, Russia, North Korea, and Palestine.

The company clarified that these delivery and availability restrictions do not necessarily mirror the specific legal rules governing cryptocurrencies within those individual countries. Instead, a complex array of factors dictates where a crypto-linked card can be successfully deployed. Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering mandates, international sanctions regimes, local banking regulations, and strict card-issuing compliance standards all play a deciding role in market accessibility.

The intersection of these variables often creates a paradoxical situation for fintech providers. Tangem observed that the exact same socioeconomic and political conditions that can trigger heavy local demand for cryptocurrency as an alternative financial rail can simultaneously make regulated card issuance significantly more difficult or entirely impossible.

As digital assets continue to gain traction globally, stablecoins are also drawing increased attention from mainstream payment giants. Recent market studies, including survey data released by Visa, indicate that stablecoin adoption in the United States could experience a dramatic surge if users are provided with bank-like protections, highlighting a broader industry trend toward merging traditional financial security with decentralized speed and efficiency.

In addition to expanding its geographical footprint and navigating regulatory hurdles, Tangem is sweetening its value proposition by introducing a cashback rewards program. The incentive structure offers users cashback paid out in Circle’s USDC stablecoin, with reward rates set at 1% for Basic users and 2% for Plus users on eligible everyday purchases.

Tangem plans to put its new offerings front and center by showcasing the first physical Tangem Pay cards to the broader fintech and blockchain community at the upcoming Token2049 conference in Singapore, marking a significant milestone in the firm’s ongoing effort to bridge the divide between decentralized finance and traditional commerce.

The figures underscore a complex global landscape where user demand for alternative financial rails does…

[496
195,1027,503,4,1022,1072,883,433,1073,64,5,1021,263
post-1382","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wallet-security","tag-access","tag-card","tag-cold-storage","tag-crypto","tag-demand","tag-doesn","tag-global","tag-hardware","tag-match","tag-says","tag-security","tag-tangem","tag-wallets
["GET
