Zcash has officially advanced its upcoming protocol overhaul by activating the NU7 network upgrade on its testnet, giving developers and node operators several weeks to evaluate crucial performance adjustments\u2014most notably a major reduction in block time\u2014before a targeted mainnet deployment later this year.<\/p>\n

According to data from the Zcash testnet block explorer ZecBlock, block 4,465,026, which marked the scheduled activation point for the NU7 upgrade, was successfully mined on Oct. 4 at 18:21:45 UTC. The Zcash development team quickly confirmed the successful milestone through a formal post on social media platform X, verifying that the NU7 upgrade was officially live and operational within the testnet environment.<\/p>\n

The NU7 release represents one of the most substantial protocol updates for the privacy-focused cryptocurrency network in recent memory. At the core of the upgrade is a structural change designed to dramatically accelerate transaction processing speeds by slashing the network\u2019s target block spacing from the historical 75 seconds down to just 25 seconds. Proponents of the change argue that significantly faster blocks will markedly improve the overall user experience by reducing wait times for transaction confirmations, bringing Zcash closer to the speed standards expected of modern blockchain networks.<\/p>\n

In addition to accelerating block generation, the NU7 upgrade introduces several other critical technical modifications to the Zcash protocol. Notably, the upgrade completely disables version 4 transactions and integrates a newly designed Network Sustainability Mechanism. However, the deprecation of version 4 transactions introduces a critical operational consideration for long-term holders. The disabling of these legacy transaction types means that any ZEC cryptocurrency currently held within Zcash\u2019s legacy Sprout shielded pool will become entirely unspendable unless holders actively migrate their funds prior to the full activation of the NU7 upgrade on the mainnet.
