While digital assets can theoretically be accessed and transferred by anyone with an internet connection, bridging the gap between blockchain-based self-custody and brick-and-mortar point-of-sale terminals requires navigating a dense maze of compliance hurdles, regional banking agreements, and international financial regulations.

Andrey Ilinskiy, head of Tangem Pay, highlighted these operational hurdles in a recent conversation with Cointelegraph, pointing out that geographic demand does not always align neatly with regulatory frameworks.

"It is not simply a question of where people want crypto cards," Ilinskiy said, adding that the availability of such financial products depends heavily on external factors. "It is where demand, regulation, banking infrastructure and card-issuing requirements happen to line up — and today, those maps do not always overlap."

The insights emerge alongside Tangem’s official announcement regarding its first physical Visa card, designed for seamless in-store and online purchases, as well as ATM withdrawals. The initial rollout of the physical card is tightly restricted to an exclusive batch of 5,000 cards.

According to the company, the payment solution is engineered to bridge the gap between traditional payment rails and decentralized finance by allowing users to fund the card directly from their self-custodial wallet. Furthermore, users retain a high degree of control over their capital; if the card is ever suspended or closed, funds can be moved back directly into the safety of the user’s personal wallet.

This self-custodial architecture addresses a fundamental tenet of the cryptocurrency ethos while introducing unique structural challenges. Tangem noted that while self-custody successfully removes one major boundary by eliminating intermediaries standing between the user and their digital assets, a completely new set of parameters emerges the moment those assets enter a regulated payment network.

Tangem delivers the cards in nearly 200 countries, excluding only 20

Despite the global nature of cryptocurrency, logistical and regulatory realities mean that physical distribution cannot be completely universal. Tangem stated that it is currently unable to deliver physical Tangem Pay cards to roughly 20 countries worldwide. Among the excluded jurisdictions are major nations and territories such as China, Russia, North Korea, and Palestine.

The company clarified that these delivery and availability restrictions do not necessarily mirror the direct regulatory rules governing cryptocurrency itself within those regions. Instead, a combination of stringent Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements, international sanctions, local banking regulations, and card-issuing compliance standards dictate precisely where a crypto-linked payment card can legally and operationally be made available.

These regulatory friction points often create an ironic paradox within the global financial landscape. According to Tangem, the very economic and political conditions that drive local demand for cryptocurrency as an alternative financial rail can simultaneously make regulated, traditional card issuance significantly more difficult to achieve in those exact same regions.

Adding further utility to the newly announced card, Tangem is introducing a cashback rewards program tied to Circle’s USDC stablecoin. Eligible purchases will yield cashback rates of 1% for Basic users and 2% for Plus users, integrating stablecoins directly into the everyday spending experience.

Tangem plans to publicly showcase the first physical Tangem Pay cards at the upcoming Token2049 conference in Singapore, offering industry participants a firsthand look at how the company intends to merge self-custodial security with mainstream payment rails.

The figures shed light on the complex intersection between decentralized financial tools and traditional, highly…

[496
195,1027,503,4,1022,1072,883,433,1073,64,5,1021,263
post-1682","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wallet-security","tag-access","tag-card","tag-cold-storage","tag-crypto","tag-demand","tag-doesn","tag-global","tag-hardware","tag-match","tag-says","tag-security","tag-tangem","tag-wallets
["GET
