This major milestone moves the sweeping planned protocol changes into a live testing environment approximately one month ahead of its targeted mainnet rollout, marking a significant step forward for the privacy-centric cryptocurrency network and its ongoing technological evolution.

According to data from the Zcash testnet block explorer ZecBlock, block 4,465,026—which served as the predetermined and scheduled activation point for NU7—was successfully mined on Oct. 4 at precisely 18:21:45 UTC. Shortly after the milestone block was added to the chain, the official Zcash development entity confirmed the successful activation in a public statement shared on the social media platform X, assuring the broader cryptographic community that NU7 was officially live and functioning on the testnet.

The rollout of NU7 represents the next major network upgrade for Zcash, introducing a comprehensive suite of foundational changes designed to optimize the blockchain’s performance, economic model, and transaction architecture. Among the most prominent features of the upgrade is a dramatic overhaul of the network’s target block spacing. Specifically, NU7 seeks to reduce Zcash’s target block time from the current 75 seconds down to a much faster 25 seconds, a modification that is expected to significantly improve transaction throughput and user experience across the ecosystem.

In addition to accelerating block times, the NU7 upgrade introduces critical changes to transaction handling and protocol economics. The upgrade permanently disables version 4 transactions, a foundational shift that modernizes the blockchain’s transaction types. Furthermore, NU7 integrates an innovative protocol feature known as the Network Sustainability Mechanism. This mechanism is designed to structurally redirect a portion of network transaction fees directly into future block rewards, establishing a more sustainable long-term economic model for the blockchain’s miners and validators as the network continues to mature.

However, the discontinuation of version 4 transactions brings with it a crucial warning for long-term holders and legacy participants within the ecosystem. Because version 4 transactions will be rendered obsolete and inactive following the upgrade, any native ZEC cryptocurrency that remains held within Zcash’s legacy Sprout shielded pool will become entirely unspendable. To prevent permanent loss of access to these digital assets, users holding funds in the legacy pool are strongly advised to move and migrate their funds before NU7 fully activates on the mainnet.

Following the initial block generation on the testnet, the Zcash Foundation issued an advisory statement encouraging node operators, developers, and ecosystem participants to utilize the newly released software candidate to thoroughly evaluate NU7 under real-world conditions. The Foundation emphasized that this crucial testnet phase provides a vital sandbox environment for developers to closely monitor network stability, assess performance metrics, and identify any potential vulnerabilities or unforeseen bugs before the community makes a final, binding decision regarding mainnet activation.

The ongoing testnet phase serves as a final proving ground before the network commits the changes to its production environment. Zcash developers are officially scheduled to convene on Oct. 20 to review the testnet performance data, make a definitive final decision on mainnet activation, and set the exact activation height for the mainnet rollout. Based on the current developmental timeline and the progress of the testnet trial, the mainnet activation for the NU7 upgrade is tentatively targeted for November 5.

Zcash has officially entered a critical new phase of its protocol development, successfully activating the…

[604
935,937,607,605,612,60,633,211,939,376,936,635,625,606
post-986","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-identity-privacy","tag-activates","tag-ahead","tag-cryptography","tag-identity","tag-mainnet","tag-network","tag-november","tag-privacy","tag-rollout","tag-targeted","tag-testnet","tag-upgrade","tag-zcash","tag-zero-knowledge
["GET
