Zcash has officially entered a critical testing phase for its upcoming protocol evolution, as developers and node operators begin evaluating the NU7 network upgrade following its successful deployment on the testnet. The milestone moves the protocol changes into a live, real-world testing environment roughly a month ahead of a targeted mainnet rollout.
According to data from the Zcash testnet block explorer ZecBlock, block 4,465,026—which served as the predetermined activation point for NU7—was successfully mined on Oct. 4 at 18:21:45 UTC. The official Zcash project channels confirmed the successful deployment shortly afterward through a post on social media platform X, verifying that the upgrade was operating smoothly on the testnet.

NU7 represents the next major network upgrade for the privacy-centric cryptocurrency, introducing a suite of substantive structural changes designed to enhance network performance, streamline transaction handling, and introduce long-term economic sustainability measures. Among the most prominent modifications is a dramatic reduction in the network’s target block spacing, which is set to drop from the legacy 75 seconds down to just 25 seconds. By accelerating block times by a factor of three, the upgrade aims to deliver a significantly faster and more responsive user experience across the Zcash ecosystem.
In addition to faster blocks, the NU7 upgrade introduces vital protocol housekeeping by formally disabling version 4 transactions. This architectural shift also carries significant implications for holders of ZEC remaining in Zcash’s legacy Sprout shielded pool. Because version 4 transactions and the legacy Sprout pool are being phased out, any funds left stranded within that older shielded environment will become permanently unspendable unless users take proactive measures to migrate their assets prior to the full activation of NU7 on the mainnet.
The upgrade also integrates a newly designed Network Sustainability Mechanism. This feature is engineered to redirect a predetermined portion of network transaction fees directly into future block rewards, establishing a more self-sustaining economic model for the blockchain’s ongoing security and development over the long term.

Following the initial deployment late last week, the Zcash Foundation released a statement advising testnet operators and community developers to actively utilize the release candidate to evaluate NU7 under realistic operating conditions. This phase of testing is viewed as an essential safeguard, providing the developer community with the necessary runway to thoroughly examine stability, catch potential bugs, and gauge network performance before committing to a permanent mainnet release.
The timeline leading up to the mainnet activation features critical decision points for the development community. Core developers and stakeholders are scheduled to convene on Oct. 20 to review telemetry data and operational insights gathered during the testnet phase. Based on these findings, the team will make a final, formal decision regarding whether to proceed with mainnet activation and lock in the exact block height for the rollout, which is currently penciled in for Nov. 5.
