Zcash has officially entered a critical testing phase for its upcoming protocol overhaul, successfully activating the NU7 network upgrade on its testnet. This milestone moves months of planning and developer discussion into a live testing environment, setting the stage for a thorough evaluation period roughly one month ahead of a targeted mainnet rollout.
According to data from the Zcash testnet block explorer ZecBlock, block 4,465,026—which served as the predetermined activation point for NU7—was successfully mined on Oct. 4 at 18:21:45 UTC. Shortly after the milestone was reached, the Zcash project confirmed the successful deployment through a formal announcement on social media platform X, verifying that NU7 is now fully operational on the testnet.

The NU7 upgrade represents a significant evolution for the privacy-focused cryptocurrency network, introducing a series of sweeping structural adjustments designed to improve network efficiency, long-term economic sustainability, and transaction handling. Among the most notable protocol changes introduced in NU7 is a dramatic reduction in the network’s target block spacing. While previous iterations of Zcash maintained a 75-second target block time, the NU7 upgrade slashes this interval down to just 25 seconds. By accelerating block production by threefold, the development team aims to deliver a faster, more responsive user experience across the network.
In addition to accelerating block times, the NU7 upgrade implements several other vital protocol adjustments. Notably, the upgrade disables version 4 transactions entirely. This specific technical change carries substantial implications for users holding funds within legacy infrastructure. Specifically, any ZEC currently stored inside Zcash’s legacy Sprout shielded pool will become entirely unspendable once the upgrade takes full effect unless holders actively migrate their funds prior to the mainnet activation of NU7. The deprecation of older transaction formats is part of a broader, ongoing effort by the developer community to streamline the protocol, phase out aging cryptographic structures, and encourage the adoption of more modern, efficient shielded pools.
Furthermore, NU7 integrates a Network Sustainability Mechanism. This new economic feature is designed to secure the long-term financial health of the protocol by automatically redirecting a designated portion of transaction fees back into future block rewards. By restructuring how transaction fees are allocated, the mechanism seeks to establish a more resilient economic foundation for miners and validators as the network evolves.

Following the successful testnet deployment, the Zcash Foundation issued an advisory statement urging network operators and developers to utilize the newly released testing environment to evaluate the NU7 release candidate under real-world conditions. This initial testnet phase is intended to provide developers, node operators, and ecosystem participants with the necessary window to identify potential bugs, assess performance metrics under stress, and ensure that the infrastructure is fully prepared for a mainnet transition.
The current testnet evaluation period is scheduled to culminate in a formal decision-making process later this month. Zcash developers are scheduled to meet on Oct. 20 to review the performance data gathered from the testnet phase, make a final decision regarding the mainnet activation, and officially lock in the target activation height. Should the testnet evaluation proceed without major disruptions, the mainnet activation for the NU7 upgrade is tentatively slated for Nov. 5, marking a major milestone in the ongoing development of the Zcash ecosystem.
