Zcash has officially advanced its upcoming protocol overhaul by activating the NU7 network upgrade on its testnet, marking a significant milestone as developers prepare for a targeted mainnet rollout later this year.
According to data from the Zcash testnet block explorer ZecBlock, block 4,465,026—which served as NU7’s designated activation point—was successfully mined on Oct. 4 at 18:21:45 UTC. The Zcash core team quickly confirmed the successful deployment through a statement published on the social media platform X, verifying that the new software release is now operating live within the test environment.
This testnet activation initiates a crucial evaluation window for developers, node operators, and infrastructure providers. Over the coming weeks, the broader Zcash community will have the opportunity to monitor the protocol under real-world conditions, stress-test the new parameters, and ensure that all participating software clients are functioning seamlessly before any permanent changes are pushed to the main production network.

At the core of the NU7 upgrade are several substantial technical modifications designed to improve the performance, efficiency, and long-term economic sustainability of the Zcash network. Among the most prominent changes is a major adjustment to the network’s block time target. Currently, Zcash maintains a target block spacing of 75 seconds. Under NU7, this target is set to be dramatically reduced to 25 seconds, a move intended to significantly accelerate transaction confirmation times and improve the overall responsiveness of the blockchain for everyday users.
In addition to faster block generation, the NU7 upgrade introduces structural updates to how transactions are handled across the network. Most notably, the upgrade completely disables version 4 transactions. While this transition modernizes the protocol and streamlines future development, it carries critical implications for holders of Zcash native currency, ZEC, who are still utilizing legacy infrastructure.
Specifically, any ZEC currently stored within Zcash’s legacy Sprout shielded pool will become entirely unspendable once the NU7 upgrade is fully implemented, unless holders actively migrate their funds prior to activation. Because the Sprout pool relies on older cryptographic parameters and version 4 transaction formats, phasing out support for these legacy structures is a necessary step for protocol modernization, but it places the onus on long-term dormant account holders to secure and move their assets ahead of time.
Furthermore, NU7 integrates a specialized Network Sustainability Mechanism. This feature is engineered to redirect a predetermined portion of network transaction fees directly back into future block rewards, creating a continuous economic loop designed to support network security and validator incentives over the long term.

The deployment of NU7 to the testnet follows the release of Zebra 7.0.0-rc-0, with the Zcash Foundation encouraging testnet operators and node runners to thoroughly test the release candidate under authentic operational conditions. This preliminary phase is a standard and essential component of decentralized protocol governance, ensuring that any unforeseen bugs, edge cases, or compatibility hurdles can be identified and addressed by software engineers prior to mainnet deployment.
The current testnet phase serves as a trial period leading up to a formal decision point. Zcash developers are officially scheduled to convene on Oct. 20 to review the performance data gathered from the testnet environment. During this meeting, the core development community will make a final decision regarding whether to proceed with mainnet activation and will establish the exact block height at which the upgrade will take effect on the primary network.
If the testnet evaluation proceeds without critical issues, the mainnet activation for NU7 is tentatively scheduled to take place on Nov. 5, culminating months of technical preparation, community governance discussions, and protocol engineering aimed at positioning Zcash for its next phase of network evolution.
