Zcash (ZEC) surged about 12% over the past 24 hours as core developers reached an agreement on a mainnet activation block for the network’s highly anticipated NU7 upgrade, which is now expected to go live in early November.

The privacy-focused cryptocurrency traded around $1,270 at last check on Wednesday, according to data from CoinGecko. The notable market rally coincided with a proposal submitted on GitHub on Tuesday by Zcash developer Sean Bowe. The proposal officially sets the target mainnet activation at block 3,543,405, a milestone that developers project will be reached on or around November 5.

The steady appreciation of Zcash highlights a robust performance for the asset over the course of the year. The value of the privacy-centric cryptocurrency, which relies on advanced trustless zero-knowledge proofs to secure and anonymize user transactions, is currently up more than 148% on a year-to-date basis, capturing renewed interest from digital asset investors amid broader market shifts.

Detailing the milestone on the development platform, Bowe noted that the target height had been officially agreed upon during a Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) editor meeting. He added, however, that the development team still needed to fully finalize the broader upgrade specifications before officially merging the proposal into the main codebase. Despite pending finalization, two key developers have already formally approved the changes on GitHub.

Further confirmation of the timeline comes from the Zakura NU7 dashboard, which also lists the upgrade as pending on the mainnet at the designated block height of 3,543,405. Like the GitHub proposal, the dashboard points to an anticipated activation date around November 5, providing market participants and node operators with a clearer roadmap as the implementation window approaches.

The primary objective of the NU7 upgrade is to drastically improve network efficiency by reducing Zcash’s target block time by two-thirds down to just 25 seconds. By accelerating block generation times from the current 75-second standard, transactions on the network will receive confirmations significantly faster, enhancing the overall user experience and transactional throughput. This optimization has been a major focus for the development community, with the shortened block times undergoing rigorous testing on the network since early October ahead of the mainnet transition.

At the same time, the Zcash Foundation’s NU7 readiness tracker indicates that preparations are progressing through various technical milestones. According to the tracking data, six out of 12 designated tasks have been successfully completed. The remaining work primarily involves resolving Zebra node synchronization issues and carrying out necessary mainnet preparations to ensure a smooth and secure transition. As developers continue to work through these remaining technical items, they have not yet officially confirmed whether these outstanding issues could potentially impact the planned November 5 activation date, leaving the timeline subject to ongoing engineering assessments and testing results.
