Pudgy Penguins-Backed Abstract Chain to Shut Down as Wealthy Investors Allocate 10% to Crypto

The cryptocurrency landscape experienced a major reality check on Tuesday as structural hurdles, institutional shifts, and technical milestones collided across the ecosystem. In a striking development for consumer-facing blockchain applications, Abstract—a layer-2 network backed by the popular Pudgy Penguins ecosystem—announced that it will wind down operations later this year. The decision follows tens of millions of dollars in financial losses and an inability to achieve sustainable product-market fit.

At the same time, traditional financial habits continue to evolve, with a comprehensive new survey from CoinShares revealing that digital assets now represent roughly 10% of portfolios for affluent investors globally. Meanwhile, technical developers within the Ethereum ecosystem are pressing forward with solutions to combat ecosystem fragmentation, highlighted by a successful test of an atomic transaction between the Ethereum mainnet and a layer-2 network via the EEZ framework.

Pudgy Penguins-Backed Abstract to Shut Down After "Tens of Millions" in Losses

Abstract, a consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 blockchain incubated and developed under the umbrella of Igloo Inc.—the parent company of the widely recognized Pudgy Penguins non-fungible token (NFT) project—revealed on Tuesday that it will shut down its operations this year. The sudden winding down of the network underscores the severe difficulties projects face when attempting to scale consumer-centric blockchain infrastructure without sufficient institutional backing or deep liquidity pools.

In an official statement published on the social media platform X, Abstract explained that its core thesis—focusing heavily on mainstream "consumer crypto" adoption—ultimately proved to be an unsustainable business model under current market conditions. When Abstract initially launched its mainnet in January 2025, its primary objective was to drive mass consumer adoption by targeting mainstream entertainment verticals and web3 gaming. To achieve this, the network was engineered to abstract away the notorious technical complexities and friction points that typically hinder traditional users from interacting with decentralized blockchains.

Behind the scenes, however, the financial toll of maintaining the ambitious network was mounting rapidly. Luca Netz, the chief executive officer of Igloo Inc., elaborated on the closure in a companion post on X, shedding light on the heavy financial investments that had sustained the project over the previous year and a half.

"Unknown to most, Igloo, Inc. had been funding Abstract over the last 18 months," Netz said. "After losing tens of millions of dollars over two years, building consumer products, assembling an all-star team, onboarding some of the biggest brands in the world, and building a community of millions, we still had not found product-market fit."

The abrupt termination of the Abstract project serves as a clear illustration of the limitations inherent in a strictly consumer-first expansion strategy within the current crypto economy. Both network leadership and Netz explicitly pointed to minimal institutional crossover, persistently thin market liquidity, and a restricted decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem as primary constraints that choked off long-term growth and prevented the network from reaching self-sustainability.

Crypto is Becoming a 10% Portfolio Bet for Wealthy Investors

While consumer-focused layer-2 networks face severe economic headwinds, the broader appetite for digital assets among high-net-worth individuals continues to expand significantly. According to a new survey published by CoinShares, digital assets now account for roughly 10% of the average investment portfolio held by affluent investors, with the vast majority of current participants expressing clear intentions to increase their market exposure over the course of the year.

The comprehensive survey gathered data from 2,230 high-net-worth investors, each possessing a minimum of $500,000 in investable assets. The geographic scope of the research spanned seven key financial jurisdictions: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Switzerland. Across all surveyed markets, digital asset ownership rates exceeded 50%, while roughly 70% of respondents in four of those nations reported actively holding cryptocurrency.

Perhaps more telling than the sheer volume of adoption is the underlying mindset driving these high-net-worth allocations. The survey data indicates a fundamental shift in how affluent investors perceive and treat digital assets within a diversified financial plan. Rather than viewing crypto through the lens of speculative day-trading, respondents overwhelmingly cited long-term capital appreciation and portfolio diversification as their primary motivations for holding digital assets. Speculation ranked dead last among motivating factors, with a mere 6% of participants primarily identifying as short-term traders.

Furthermore, broader macroeconomic turbulence and market corrections failed to dampen this sentiment. The market downturn observed in February did not reverse the bullish outlook of these affluent investors. In every single country included in the survey, a larger share of investors reported that the recent market sell-off actually increased their interest in cryptocurrency rather than diminished it. Consequently, at least 85% of existing crypto holders across five of the surveyed nations plan to actively expand their digital asset positions before the year concludes.

Bitcoin continues to serve as the primary gateway for this demographic, with 80% of crypto-holding affluent investors maintaining exposure to BTC. However, Bitcoin is rarely treated as a standalone asset class; the survey revealed that 89% of Bitcoin investors also held complementary positions in other digital assets, reflecting a maturing and sophisticated approach to crypto asset management.

EEZ Tests Atomic L1-to-L2 Transaction in Push to Unify Ethereum

As consumer chains grapple with economic realities and institutional investors deepen their allocations, developers working on the underlying infrastructure of the Ethereum ecosystem are tackling one of the network’s most persistent technical challenges: fragmentation. In a major step toward resolving this issue, the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) framework has successfully tested an atomic transaction bridging the Ethereum mainnet and a layer-2 scaling network.

The milestone was publicly shared on Tuesday by Eduardo Antuña Díez, a contributor to the EEZ project, who characterized the achievement as the "first atomic cross-chain" transaction linking a layer-1 network to a layer-2 rollup. Immutable blockchain records and transaction logs hosted on Etherscan verified the milestone, capturing a cross-chain call that successfully transferred 0.001 Ether alongside a synchronized state update for a scaling rollup.

In the context of blockchain architecture, an atomic transaction ensures that linked operations spanning multiple separate networks either succeed completely as a single unit or are entirely reversed if any individual component fails. This technical capability is vital for eliminating the security risks and friction associated with traditional cross-chain token bridges.

Back in March, developers introducing the EEZ framework explained that the architecture was explicitly designed to allow individual rollups to interact seamlessly with one another and with the Ethereum mainnet within the execution bounds of a single transaction, bypassing the need for external bridge protocols. The ultimate vision of the initiative is to reconnect liquidity pools and decentralized applications that have become heavily isolated across disparate layer-2 environments.

Industry experts have long warned about the consequences of ecosystem fragmentation. Friederike Ernst, co-founder of Gnosis, previously noted in discussions surrounding the sector that the historical lack of synchronous composability across layer-2 networks forces protocols to maintain separate, isolated deployments on every single chain. This structural design choice inevitably fractures overall market liquidity and creates unnecessary complexity for developers and end-users alike. By demonstrating successful atomic transactions between layers, the EEZ project represents a promising pathway toward a more unified and efficient Ethereum ecosystem.
