Automotive giant Hyundai Motor has successfully completed a pioneering cross-border treasury transfer utilizing blockchain technology and stablecoins, marking a significant milestone in the integration of digital assets into traditional corporate finance. The test transaction, which involved the company’s United States and Mexican corporate units, saw a $20,000 payment settled in approximately seven minutes using Tether’s USDT stablecoin on the Avalanche blockchain network.

According to details shared by Tether, the transaction demonstrated the practical viability of blockchain-based rails for international corporate settlements. In the test, Hyundai Motor America converted corporate funds into USDT, transferred the stablecoin across the blockchain network to Hyundai Motor Mexico, and subsequently converted the digital tokens back into local fiat currency. The entire operational cycle, including transfer and verification, was completed in about seven minutes. This stands in stark contrast to traditional cross-border banking corridors, which typically require three to four hours—and frequently longer—to clear and settle international wire transfers due to intermediary banking layers, time zone differences, and legacy compliance checks.

The high-profile pilot leveraged settlement infrastructure provided by Axiym, while Hyundai Card played a critical role by designing the overarching remittance structure. Furthermore, Hyundai Card oversaw the rigorous regulatory, compliance, accounting, and operational frameworks necessary to ensure that the proof-of-concept adhered to internal corporate governance standards.

The primary objective of the pilot was to evaluate whether stablecoin-based settlement architectures could be seamlessly plugged into existing corporate treasury operations without necessitating disruptive changes to established governance protocols, compliance workflows, or accounting procedures. Following the success of this initial trial, the companies are planning a subsequent phase that will expand testing to encompass additional payment corridors and local currency settlements as they continue to evaluate the broader utility of blockchain technology for enterprise treasury workflows.

Corporate treasury emerges as key stablecoin use case

The initiative by Hyundai highlights a broader, accelerating trend across the global corporate landscape, where corporate treasury has rapidly emerged as a primary focus for stablecoin issuers and enterprise software providers alike. Financial technology firms and infrastructure developers have increasingly rolled out sophisticated products specifically designed to support streamlined cross-border payments, optimized liquidity management, and efficient intercompany settlements.

This institutional momentum has seen major software providers adapt to rising demand. In April, prominent enterprise treasury management software provider Kyriba partnered with Circle to integrate the USDC stablecoin directly into its corporate treasury platform. This collaboration was designed to empower enterprise treasury teams to manage stablecoin balances alongside traditional cash positions within a single interface. By doing so, corporations can settle eligible cross-border and intercompany transactions in near-real time while unlocking access to liquidity outside of traditional banking hours, all while relying on their existing treasury workflows and internal approval controls.

Empirical data from the broader financial sector underscores this structural shift toward digital assets for institutional cash management. A report published this month by Bitso Business revealed that stablecoin transaction volumes processed on its platform surged by 81% year over year during the first half of 2026. This dramatic growth was propelled by sustained corporate demand for real-time settlement mechanisms, enhanced treasury management tools, and efficient cross-border liquidity solutions. Notably, more than 60% of the new business clients onboarded by the platform during this period consisted of established financial institutions, including traditional banks and licensed payment service providers.

Business surveys and market analysis further reinforce the narrative of widening enterprise adoption. A comprehensive report released in June by Paybis indicated that 22.5% of surveyed businesses either already utilize stablecoins for international B2B payments or actively plan to implement them within the next twelve months. Citing extensive research from McKinsey, the report highlighted that business-to-business transactions accounted for roughly 60% of the estimated $390 billion in aggregate global stablecoin payment volume recorded in 2025.

This corporate push into blockchain-based settlements coincides with robust overall growth within the digital asset economy. Aggregate stablecoin market capitalization has climbed to approximately $312.3 billion, representing an increase of roughly 21.5% compared to the $257.1 billion recorded a year prior, according to data compiled by DefiLlama. Amid this ongoing expansion, Tether’s USDT continues to maintain its position as the largest stablecoin by total market valuation, serving as a foundational asset for cross-border experimentation among multinational corporations seeking operational efficiency in an increasingly digitized global economy.
