Zcash (ZEC) experienced a strong market rally over the past 24 hours, surging approximately 12% as core developers officially agreed on a mainnet activation block for the network’s highly anticipated NU7 upgrade, which is now expected to roll out in early November.
The privacy-focused cryptocurrency was trading around $1,270 during late Wednesday trading sessions, according to data from CoinGecko. This double-digit upward price movement closely followed a crucial proposal submitted on GitHub by Zcash developer Sean Bowe on Tuesday. The proposal formally set the targeted mainnet activation at block 3,543,405, a milestone that the development community anticipates will be reached on or around November 5.
With this latest market surge, the value of Zcash—a digital asset renowned for utilizing advanced, trustless zero-knowledge proofs to secure user privacy—has extended its impressive multi-month performance. The token is currently up more than 148% on a year-to-date basis, reflecting sustained investor interest and growing momentum heading into the fourth quarter of the year.
The timeline agreement was solidified during a collaborative decision-making session. "Height agreed at ZIP editor meeting," Sean Bowe wrote in his GitHub pull request, noting that the development team still needed to finalize the remaining technical upgrade specifications before officially merging the proposal into the main codebase. The changes received formal approval from two key developers, signaling growing consensus across the core infrastructure teams.
Further corroborating the timeline, the Zakura NU7 dashboard also lists the upcoming upgrade as currently pending on the mainnet at block 3,543,405, maintaining the early November projection around November 5.
The upcoming NU7 upgrade introduces significant architectural changes to the Zcash network, most notably aiming to reduce Zcash’s target block time by two-thirds down to just 25 seconds. By accelerating block production from the current 75-second interval, the network expects to allow user transactions to receive confirmations significantly faster, thereby improving the overall user experience and throughput of the blockchain. This reduction in block times has been undergoing rigorous testing environments since early October, following successful testnet deployments.
While momentum remains strong and development milestones are being met, technical preparations are still actively underway. The Zcash Foundation’s NU7 readiness tracker shows that six out of 12 planned tasks have been completed. The remaining work involves addressing specific Zebra node synchronization issues and carrying out general mainnet preparations. At this stage, developers have not yet officially confirmed whether these outstanding issues could potentially impact the planned early November activation date, keeping the community closely monitoring GitHub repositories and developer updates for any new status reports.
