BitMine Sets 5% Ether Hard Cap, Abstract Shuts Down, and Crypto Claims 10% of Wealthy Portfolios

The cryptocurrency landscape witnessed a series of major developments on Wednesday, highlighted by a definitive supply limit from a major corporate treasury holder, a high-profile closure within the layer-2 scaling sector, and fresh survey data revealing deeper institutional and affluent capital integration.

Speaking at the Token2049 conference in Singapore, Tom Lee announced that Bitmine Immersion Technologies is finalizing its massive accumulation strategy and has instituted a firm upper boundary on its holdings. Meanwhile, the consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network Abstract—backed by the prominent non-fungible token ecosystem Pudgy Penguins and its parent company Igloo Inc.—announced it would wind down operations after struggling to secure sustainable product-market fit despite tens of millions of dollars in investments. Compounding these structural shifts, a comprehensive global study published by CoinShares revealed that digital assets have successfully captured an average of 10% of total portfolios among high-net-worth investors across key Western markets, signaling a fundamental evolution in how affluent capital views cryptocurrency.

BitMine Sets 5% Ether ‘Hard Cap’ as Accumulation Target Nears

Bitmine Immersion Technologies is drawing a firm line beneath its digital asset balance sheet. According to Chairman Tom Lee, the firm has formally established a 5% hard cap on its Ether holdings, a threshold it is rapidly approaching after months of aggressive accumulation.

Addressing attendees during a keynote presentation at the Token2049 industry gathering in Singapore on Wednesday, Lee confirmed that Bitmine currently holds roughly 6 million Ether. This substantial stash translates to approximately 4.9% of the entire circulating supply of the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency. Based on current circulating metrics, the firm requires only about 100,000 additional ETH to cross its designated finish line.

"That’s a hard cap. We’re not gonna be accumulating past 5%," Lee told the audience, removing any ambiguity surrounding the firm’s long-term treasury management strategy. "We’re not gonna own more than 5% of Ethereum."

The announcement marks a notable hardening of the company’s fiscal policy. Lee had previously left the door open regarding the potential for an even larger accumulation phase, noting that future decisions would depend heavily on broader Ethereum adoption metrics. In an interview with crypto media outlet Bankless back in August, Lee suggested that the company might revisit its supply ceiling parameters by 2027. However, Wednesday’s keynote indicates that leadership has decided to solidify boundaries much sooner, stabilizing the firm’s exposure relative to the broader macroeconomic and blockchain environment.

Pudgy Penguins-Backed Abstract to Shut Down After ‘Tens of Millions’ in Losses

While corporate treasuries continue to cement their positions in baseline assets, the infrastructure layer supporting consumer applications continues to face severe economic headwinds. Abstract, a consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 blockchain incubated and built by Igloo Inc.—the parent company behind the popular Pudgy Penguins ecosystem—announced on Tuesday that it will shut down later this year.

The decision follows an intensive effort to scale the network and discover a viable product-market fit, an ambition that ultimately proved financially unsustainable. In a public statement shared via X, the network’s development team explained that their foundational thesis—focusing heavily on the emerging sector of "consumer crypto"—faced severe hurdles that ultimately broke their operational model.

Abstract officially launched its mainnet in January 2025 with the explicit goal of driving mainstream crypto adoption through mainstream entertainment channels. The network was designed to strip away the cryptographic friction, gas fee complexities, and cumbersome wallet interactions that traditionally alienate average consumers from blockchain environments.

However, the capital required to sustain operations outpaced user monetization and ecosystem growth. Luca Netz, CEO of Igloo Inc., provided further context regarding the financial realities of the venture in a concurrent post on X.

"Unknown to most, Igloo, Inc. had been funding Abstract over the last 18 months," Netz said. "After losing tens of millions of dollars over two years, building consumer products, assembling an all-star team, onboarding some of the biggest brands in the world, and building a community of millions, we still had not found product-market fit."

The winding down of Abstract underscores the rigorous economic limits currently facing the consumer-first blockchain strategy. Both Netz and organizational updates highlighted that a lack of meaningful institutional crossover, thin underlying liquidity pools, and an underdeveloped decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem significantly constrained the network’s ability to retain long-term user engagement and developer retention.

Crypto Is Becoming a 10% Portfolio Bet for Wealthy Investors

In stark contrast to the challenges faced by niche consumer chains, digital assets are continuing to cement a permanent home within traditional wealth management portfolios. According to a broad new survey released by CoinShares, cryptocurrencies and digital tokens now account for roughly 10% of the average asset allocation among affluent investors, with the vast majority of existing participants planning to expand their exposure over the course of the year.

The study gathered data from 2,230 high-net-worth investors, each possessing a minimum of $500,000 in investable assets. The geographic scope of the survey spanned the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Switzerland. Across every single market included in the study, digital asset ownership rates surpassed 50%, climbing to approximately 70% in four of the targeted nations.

Beyond raw adoption metrics, the survey points to a fundamental maturity in investor psychology. Rather than viewing digital assets through a purely speculative lens, respondents overwhelmingly cited long-term capital appreciation and portfolio diversification as their primary motivations for holding crypto. Short-term trading speculation ranked dead last among motivations, with a mere 6% of participants identifying primarily as day traders or short-term market participants.

Market volatility also failed to shake the confidence of wealthy holders. Despite a notable market downturn in February, more investors reported that the sell-off actually increased their interest in digital assets rather than diminishing it across every surveyed country. Looking forward, at least 85% of existing crypto holders in five of the surveyed regions confirmed their intention to add to their current positions before the year concludes.

Bitcoin continues to serve as the primary gateway for wealthy capital entering the digital asset economy, with 80% of crypto-owning respondents holding BTC in their portfolios. However, this exposure is rarely kept in isolation. The data reveals that 89% of Bitcoin investors also maintain holdings in other altcoins and digital assets, indicating a sophisticated approach to multi-token portfolio construction among the world’s affluent class.
